Global mineralogical and aqueous mars history derived from OMEGA/Mars Express data.

چکیده
Global mineralogical mapping of Mars by the Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activité (OMEGA) instrument on the European Space Agency's Mars Express spacecraft provides new information on Mars' geological and climatic history. Phyllosilicates formed by aqueous alteration very early in the planet's history (the "phyllocian" era) are found in the oldest terrains; sulfates were formed in a second era (the "theiikian" era) in an acidic environment. Beginning about 3.5 billion years ago, the last era (the "siderikian") is dominated by the formation of anhydrous ferric oxides in a slow superficial weathering, without liquid water playing a major role across the planet.

Mars History Derived from the Mineralogical Data of Omega/mex Acquired during the First Martian Year of Operation
Introduction: The pionneering Mariner and Viking optical mappings have revealed that Mars underwent an intense and active evolution, with tectonic, volcanic, water-driven and erosion processes that left record in a variety of surface structures. At the same time, they showed that Mars did not suffered a global surface reset, as it preserved areas dating from the early heavy bombardment. Major q...
متن کاملSpectral Indexing of Chemical Weathering in the Mid-infrared: New Means to Evaluate Weathering on Mars
Introduction: Spectroscopic observations offer the best means to evaluate chemical weathering on Mars at regional and global scales. Near-infrared (NIR) spectral data from OMEGA and CRISM have revealed hydrated minerals that indicate aqueous alteration, including different clay minerals [1-3], sulfates [1,4], silica [5], and carbonates [6], which are regionally localized across the Martian high...
متن کاملSulfates in Martian layered terrains: the OMEGA/Mars Express view.
The OMEGA/Mars Express hyperspectral imager identified hydrated sulfates on light-toned layered terrains on Mars. Outcrops in Valles Marineris, Margaritifer Sinus, and Terra Meridiani show evidence for kieserite, gypsum, and polyhydrated sulfates. This identification has its basis in vibrational absorptions between 1.3 and 2.5 micrometers. These minerals constitute direct records of the past aq...
متن کاملGlobal Mineral Maps on Mars
Introduction: Determining the mineralogy of Mars constitutes an essential part of understanding of the present and past condition of the surface. After two years of operation, the OMEGA imaging spectrometer on-board Mars Express has achieved near-global coverage with spatial resolution varying between 300 m and 4.8 km depending on the pericentre altitude of the spacecraft's highly elliptical or...
متن کاملOBSERVATION OF 3 μm HYDRATION FEATURE ON MARS FROM OMEGA-MEx DATA
Introduction: The OMEGA investigation, on board the ESA Mars Express mission, is to map Mars’ surface at a 0.3to 5-kilometer resolution using visible-infrared hyperspectral reflectance imagery. After numerous results on Mars surface diversity using the C channel (1.0 to 2.5 μm) [1], this paper reports a systematic reduction of the OMEGA data in the L channel (spectral range 2.5 to 5.1 μm). This...
